Virgin’s Velocity Points are now redeemable across the Tigerair Network

In pretty major news for the local frequent flyer programs – of which Virgin and Qantas are the two major players – members of the Velocity Frequent Flyer Program are now able to redeem their points towards any Tigerair flight purchased from the Tigerair website or the Velocity Membership Contact Centre.

To redeem points, members are instructed to log in to their account and simply indicate the number of points they would like to use. Points may be used for partial or full payment of base fares, optional extras, and taxes. From April 13, members will also be able to use their points for other post-booking purchases, such as flight changes.

Although Velocity Members can redeem points through Tigerair, they are not able to earn them on Tigerair services. This reflects how Qantas treats its frequent flyer relationship with its own budget airline, Jetstar, and comes a year and a half after Virgin famously purchased Tigerair for $1. This is the first move Virgin has made to align the airline within its Velocity Frequent Flyer programs.

“We are very excited to be partnering with Velocity Frequent Flyer, and to offer this new opportunity for Velocity members to use their Velocity Points to travel on our network”, says Adam Rowe, Tigerair Australia Commercial Director.

As an added incentive for regular Tigerair customers, those who sign up to the Velocity Program between April 7 and June 30 will also go into a draw for the chance to win 20,000 Velocity Points and a $1,000 Tiger Air travel voucher.
