This 17th century sugar plantation on the Spanish island of La Palma now hosts a unique luxury hotel

High-end hospitality brand Luxe Collection by L.E Hotels, noted for their incredibly unique and individual properties across 18 countries, have recently added Hotel Hacienda de Abajo to their portfolio, a historic property that’s built on a restored 17th century sugar plantation located on the island of San Miguel de La Palma, in the Canary Islands.

With a strict adults-only (16+) policy, the property is the first hotel built in the Spanish municipality of Tazacorte, an area renowned throughout Spain for having the most sunshine a year. The original layout of the sugar estate has informed the design and architecture, including the use of several furnishings and artifacts found throughout the property. From an 18th century table to a sculpture of the Virgin May, the property has more than 1300 antiquities, some dating all the way back to the first century.

Lush vegetation surrounds the property, which is located near the coast and offers views of both the sea and banana crops. It’s surely a unique setting for L.E Hotel’s usual high standard of service and luxury.

“Luxe Collection classifications are not easy to come by”, said L.E Hotels Founder and Chairman Efrem Harkham. “To start, a property must have historical significance, a prime location and the finest services and emenities, and Hotel Hacienda de Abajo meets the mark in every regard”.

With only 32 guestrooms and suites, the distinctive hotel is boutique-minded with premium details like L’Occitane amenities and ecologically friendly mattresses, bedding and towels. All rooms are decorated with works of art, fine furnishings and tapestries from the largest private art collection on the island.

La Palma’s famously warm and sunny climate ensures the property’s on-site Bath House should be one of its most popular features, including the breezy El Sitio restaurant, where guests are able to explore local cuisine mixed with rich and elaborate international influences.
