Lufthansa plan new business class product for forthcoming Boeing 777-9 fleet

Come 2020, passengers on Lufthansa will be opened up to a swift upgrade in privacy and comfort as the airline has this month unveiled plans for a new Business Class product for their forthcoming Boeing 777-9 fleet. This will range from seats with more desk space to new mattresses, duvets and even pyjamas.

The focus of this eventual upgrade will be the brand-new Business Class seat, developed with the goal of facilitating the best and soundest sleep possible while in air. This means beds with a length of up to 220cm (86.6 inches) and a newly constructed back rest which makes it possible for the shoulder to sink in when passengers are lying on their side, effectively keeping the spine straight for a more relaxing sleep.

“The new, ultra-modern Lufthansa Business Class creates a new global benchmark,” said Harry Hohmeister, Member of the Executive Board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG. “We have consistently and continuously refined our range of premium products for our guests and modernised Lufthansa. Our focus is and has always been on the wishes of our customers and their specific needs.”

The incoming Boeing 777-9 has a considerably wider cabin which has given ample space for the airline to introduce this new Business Class in a 1-2-1 and 1-1-1 seat configuration, ensuring all passengers have direct access to the aisle. The new seats also provide customers with a significantly increased amount of personal space in addition to more privacy and a generous amount of storage space and flat surfaces. All functions of each seat, including the in-flight entertainment system, will be controllable via the passenger’s personal device, which – assuming it’s a smartphone or tablet – can be recharged at the seat using wireless technology. Unsurprisingly, this also means larger HD screens for each seat.

For any Business Class passengers who don’t necessarily want to wait until 2020 for these changes, Lufthansa will be rolling out some new innovations in 2018. This will include mattresses that have been developed exclusively for the airline, to be provided on long-haul flights from early next year, as well the lined (but light) sweeping sweaters that are usually only available in First Class also being made available for Business.
