AccorHotels purchase Mantra Group for $1.2 billion

AccorHotels has maintained a strong presence in the Australian market since first opening here with Novotel Sydney in Darling Harbour in 1999. Not only is that presence growing, particularly with the recent opening of five-star hotel – and Instagram star – Sofitel Darling Harbour, but the hotel group’s portfolio has just taken a giant leap forward with a $1.2 billion purchase of Mantra Group, adding their 138 properties and more than 20,000 rooms to their portfolio, with properties across Australian, New Zealand, Indonesia and Hawaii.

That notable deal brings Accor’s portfolio up to 330 hotels and resorts across Australia alone, and follows just a few months after Mantra purchased the Australian-owned Art Series Hotel Group for a cool $52 million.

Along with the tremendously popular Art Series properties, Accor’s takeover of Mantra includes the group’s most known brands like Peppers, Mantra and BreakFree, joining the group’s already sizable stable that reaches across brands from Sofitel, Novotel, Pullman, Mercure, Ibis, MGallery, and a few others.

The biggest benefit for guests is that now there are much more properties that will fall under the Accor loyalty program, although Asia Pacific chairman and chief operating officer Michael Issenberg has indicated to media that the process of adding all hotels to the program could take at least a year.
