The entrance to the Mecure Potts Point is tucked away on Victoria St in the heart of Sydney’s King’s Cross. As the quiet, unassuming ground floor lobby gives way to the reception on the second floor, the Mecure’s appeal is clear and present – it’s an oasis of class in an area renowned for debauchery.
A very short walk to the Victoria St/Darlinghurst Rd intersection nearby finds you equipped with everything you’ll need for socialising and surviving during your day – a nearby shopping complex is home to a multi-level Coles among other speciality stores, and there are so many different pubs and restaurants to choose from, all only a stone’s throw from the hotel’s door. Don’t feel like leaving the building? You don’t have to. The Mercure Potts Point has a pair of bars and restaurant of their own located on the second floor.
The Mercure is home to two sets of rooms – Standard Rooms and Superior Rooms, and it was one of the Harbour View Superior Rooms in which I stayed. The room itself is sizeable enough for two people, with a comfortable queen bed dominating the centre of the room, a modest bathroom and storage area near the entry.
It’s the view that’s the real draw here, though. Throwing open the curtains upon entering the room was quite an experience – you are treated to an unimpeded view of the Sydney skyline and it’s iconic structures – the Harbour Bridge, the Opera House, the Centrepoint Tower. Periodically, I would forget that the view was there at all and then I’d get to enjoy it all over again. And if you think it’s pretty during the day, wait until you see it at night.
The Mercure staff were extremely warm, personable and helpful for the duration of my stay and were more than happy to answer any questions I had, point me in the right direction when I looked a bit lost or even just strike up a conversation when they saw me having a beer at one of their second floor bars in the evening.
Though the rooms are placed in close proximity to one-another, the walls are quite thick and so noise from other rooms and even outside isn’t a problem. Sydney had a rather warm weekend during my stay but the in-room air conditioning was more than up to the task of keeping me comfortable with barely a sound.
