Hotel Review: Standard Queen Room at the ibis Sydney Airport Hotel

When you’ve got an annoyingly short layover in any city, finding satisfactory accommodation can be a bit tricky, especially if your flight onward is an early departure. Luckily, if you’re ever in this situation in Sydney, the ibis hotel chain has you covered. The ibis Sydney Airport Hotel is perfect for any short term stay and for me, as I was needing to be back at the Sydney Domestic terminal to catch a 6am flight, the proximity to the airport was as ideal as the comfy interior of the rooms on offer.

The check in process was painless, with the staff even able to check me in to my room earlier than the afternoon check in time. The concierge desk backed right on to the hotel’s restaurant, which offered a standard range of meals for purchase. One con that cropped up during my stay at the ibis Sydney Airport Hotel was having to go and retrieve my own meal from the restaurant, instead of having it brought to my room, as per any other room service feature.

The Standard Queen room offers all the amenities you need to guarantee a comfortable stay and a good night’s sleep. Though it is cozy in size, the queen bed is perfect for the solo traveller looking to spread out, or for a couple to fit comfortably. Elsewhere in the room is a full desk set up facing a window, though the views aren’t much to bask in, bearing in mind the industrial district the hotel is in and the amount of construction happening in the area currently.

The room has an alarm clock with in built iPod dock, a Foxtel-enabled flat screen TV and Friday. There is not much room for storage but again, if your stay here is a brief one, the lack of cupboard/hanging space isn’t going to be too much of an issue. For any professional travelling through and needing space to work, the desk in the Standard Queen Room is ideal and there is Wifi available, even if it is not free.

What is impressive about the way this hotel’s rooms’ have been designed is in its bathroom set up. While the room itself may be smaller than other large franchise hotels, the bathroom is larger than one may expect. A decent sized shower with full vanity and toilet included in the same room, the bathroom was crisp its colour palette, offering for a more spacious vibe.

The ibis Sydney Airport Hotel ultimately provides the commuting traveller a great option for accommodation. It’s proximity to the city makes it less an ideal option for a family or larger group of people staying in Sydney, though it is easily accessible enough via public transport. The airport shuttle service that is on offer for travellers is not an included service as some may be led to think, the service is an added expense, but it is affordable and is a much preferred way of ensuring you reach your departure terminal on time.

For anyone passing through, this hotel is definitely worth a check-in. For me, I was arriving off a long, long trip back to Australia from the United States and all I wanted was to collapse in bed and enjoy a hot shower in a comfortable environment that didn’t feel as claustrophobic as planes can sometimes evoke – the hotel ibis delivered all of the above!
