Hotel Review: Mantra Hindmarsh Square offers an unbeatable apartment experience in Adelaide’s CBD

Positioned in the middle of Adelaide’s CBD is one of two Mantra Group hotels. Overlooking Hindmarsh Square, a stone’s throw from the historic Rundle Mall and King William St is the Mantra Hindmarsh Square – a much anticipated sojourn for us on a heated summer weekend.

Upon arrival at the hotel, the friendly concierge staff were quick to accommodate our needs. Even though we were arriving a few hours ahead of check in time, the staff were helpful in storing our luggage and giving us a prompt time to return (even offering to call me if a room had become available earlier). When you’ve spent most of the morning stumbling around in the heat, it’s these small things that really impress – trust and believe. Returning to the Mantra Hindmarsh later in the afternoon, I notice how modern the lobby and restaurant/bar that is attached, is. To my knowledge, this hotel has been at this site for some years, yet the decor and maintenance of it would have anyone believing that this place is a new kid on the block.

The One Bedroom Suite we are calling home this weekend is located just beneath the top floor two-bed apartments and immediately, I am drawn to the magnificent views of the city and the Adelaide Hills that are just off the private balcony. Look down for too long and vertigo may set in, but when you’ve got views so expansive drawing your attention up and out, you needn’t worry. The privacy element of the outdoor setting was a big drawcard for me; you would easily be able to sit out on the balcony and enjoy a meal or gathering with no prying eyes or discomfort due to a lack of space.

Inside, the accommodating living area fits a lounge suite, ottoman and TV (the entry to the balcony is just off this area). A kitchenette with all the mod-cons sits neatly in the same area, with the island country and high stools making a perfect breakfast nook and meal preparation area if you are looking at staying at the Mantra for longer than a few days.

While the living area definitely wouldn’t be big enough to accommodate more than two couples or a small family, say, arriving to the suite, I felt welcomed and at ease. A separate bathroom houses a decent sized shower and vanity, with plenty of towels and a water pressure that remained gloriously satisfying the entire weekend – who doesn’t love indulging in a good long shower after a day or night out?

Because the bathroom was separate and the suite had an entire living area, kitchen and balcony well-built and designed into its plans, the bedroom of the One Bedroom Suite was smaller than I had been expecting. Spacious, indeed, for a couple to put their luggage, the room did remain cosy all the same.

In saying this, the queen size bed was incredibly comfortable and I had the best sleep I could remember having in some weeks. One thing I will give the suite is its incredible air conditioning – again, Adelaide had endured a killer summer and this particular weekend was a sweaty one; I found myself having to turn the air con off at different points, it was that chilled. It was a great feeling to come back to after nights out, knowing that such a comfortable bed awaited me and I could escape back into a little igloo of coolness away from the heated evenings that would dominate that weekend.

The Mantra Group are synonymous with professionalism and high quality accommodation, which is exactly what we were met with when we came across the Hindmarsh Square property. Perfectly located between the CBD’s East and West End’s, the hotel was a perfect pitstop and end-of-journey destination after a weekend in Adelaide during its bustling festival season. Creature comforts in the middle of a chaotic city is sometimes all you want as a traveller, and the Mantra Hindmarsh definitely delivered.

For a room at the Mantra Hindmarsh, rates start at approximately $184 AUD per night.
