Travel Diary: We explore Toronto with Melbourne artist Woodes

This year’s Canadian Music Week gave Melbourne artist Woodes (aka Elle Graham) the opportunity to not only introduce herself to some newcomers to her music, but to also embark on her first ever run of shows overseas.

A talented songwriter and producer, Woodes’ time in Toronto brought her a solid response, not to mention the benefits of being able to perform as part of a strong Australian contingent backed by SOUNDS AUSTRALIA. In light of the organisation’s recent funding cuts, Woodes and her team have voiced their support for SOUNDS AUSTRALIA, adding that they are ‘Also devastated about the SOUNDS AUSTRALIA funding being cut and would love to comment that these opportunities wouldn’t be possible without them’.

It wasn’t all work though and as we see below, Woodes was able to play tourist as well. Check out Elle’s shots from her time away below!

My first showcase of the week was outside in downtown Toronto, fortunately the sun came out for my set. Lots of locals came in to watch as well as a bunch of bands + Canadian Music Week conference attendees.
I played three showcases whilst at Canadian Music Week. At each one, I met both local and International artists. The audiences at each of the performances were supportive and attentive; Toronto is a great city for live music. I felt very fortunate to play my first overseas shows there.

My first day in Toronto. I arrived a little earlier in the week before the conference began, so I got to explore the city. I loved visiting the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Royal Ontario Museum.

On my last morning in Toronto I went up the top of the CN tower. It was a topical landmark the week of CMW, as Drake had just dropped his album, where he’s sat on the top of the tower. At the top there was a great view of the surrounding water and island. It was nice to look across the grid of the city and map where I’d walked.
