Travel Diary: Sydney’s Josef Salvat takes us to Brighton, England

Josef Salvat takes the AU review along on his tour of England for The Great Escape last year. Salvat brings us quirky photos of his trip including his visit to Brighton, chill days at the beach, seeing live bands like Slaves and stumbling upon a pigeon that oddly enough, gives him a new perspective on life. This is just a street in Brighton, possibly where we parked, maybe not.

First stop of the day was to Juice 107.2, which does what it says on the packet – radio made in Brighton. I did an acoustic of ‘Hustler’ and a quick interview and then the radio guy and I chatted about how we both wanted to see Lion Babe the next night and then I had a glass of water and then I left.

At the venue waiting for our turn to sound check. We played at a place called the Old Market, actually a very cool venue. The cross-legged guy on the ground to the left is Zak Abel who was playing that night too – he’s cool, go have a listen.

This looks like a photo of nothing but wait for it. By this stage of the night the gig was over and I was out. I lost the people I was with and ran out of battery so was just blundering around Brighton hoping to bump into someone. Then I walked past this place, which was the first place I ever played in Brighton – at The Great Escape 2013 – it was also my second gig or so. So I had a nice drunken and alone memory moment, and then thought of you and took this photo.

Next day trying my best, probably in the afternoon.

Brighton hotdogs.

Slaves. A quite terrible photo of a quite great band.

On my way to the train station, a storm of emotions, this pigeon put everything into perspective.
