How to live the dream of driving a red mustang around California on a budget

Acquiring the freedom of hiring a car with a low-budget to assist in exploring California and its surrounds has, for a long time, been impossible. L.A.’s independent Sakura Car Rental changes all of that.

From Yaris’ to Corolla’s to 15-passenger vans and to our Americana urge – the Ford Mustang convertible (in red of course), Sakura has around 30 different car models and sizes that will surely accommodate any need. Prices start at US$26 a day, but all cars are available for a cheaper, weekly (7 day rate) rate.

From the desert, to the beach.

With a luxury van pickup from LAX, getting to the Sakura Car Rental site 10 minutes away was simple and easy. Their staff was just as eager to get us into our car, as we were to get into it. Friendly and charming, we were assited with road maps and given helpful highway hints.

Unlike the large car rental outlets, you will know your final outstanding budget once you book with Sakura. Through their online reservation form, the customer is shown and picks the applicable insurance packages to their needs and liking. The option to select individual or them all can help with any budget:

  • Rental Liability Insurance (US$13/day) – Rental Liability Insurance protects you against claims made by a third party for bodily injury and/or property damage sustained as a result of an accident while you are operating the rental vehicle. It provides you with up to $30,000 of protection ($15,000 per person for body injury, $5000 per accident for property damage).
  • Supplemental Liability Insurance (US$10/day) – Supplemental Liability Insurance provides the customer with up to 1 million dollars of increased liability protection.
  • Collision Damage Waiver (US$16/day)   – When you purchase a Collision Damage Waiver, you will not be held responsible for damage to the car that you are renting in the event of an accident
  • Personal Accident Coverage (US$6/day) – Personal Accident Coverage provides the customer and all passengers coverage for medical expenses related to bodily injury or death. Coverage has a $500,000 aggregate limit.

Plus, if you’re under the age of 25, they will hire to you for only US$10/day. On average this was atleast US$15 cheaper than anywhere else we could find. You won’t find any gnarly, and wallet demolishing hidden inclusions when you get off that 15 hour flight.

The keyless ignition on our V8 Ford Mustang convertible complemented the ease and freedom of beginning our epic journey to Desert Trip. Simple access to the cars Bluetooth allowed for the perfect road trip to be put on. Even with the roof down and the wind howling, the speakers were considerably surrounding, deep and clear.

The engine roared as we hit the Los Angeles freeways and roamed into the Californian desert. With the roof down, wind through our hair, and dust twisters flying through the Mojave National Preserve, the horse emblem of the Mustang was returned to its active, roaming environment. We lost ourselves not just in the beauty of the landscape, but the beast of the car.

Wild horses.
